A five-speed manual was standard Gordini fare, as were wider, 165 x 13 (vs. 155 x 13) Michelin radials. It's the Coupe Convertible versions of the 17TL and 17 Gordini 2+2 that really fascinate me, with their power-operated folding soft top that operated in fixed tracks, plus a snug, protective fiberglass topper that secured over this for winter.

Back in 1977 I had a yellow 1972 Renault 17 Gordini. It was first year they imported it to the states. Featured a 120hp 1500 cc engine with 4-speed and super cool interior/buckets/dash. I remember a typically French great ride that tracked like it was on rails at hwy speeds, lots of torque steer, awful brakes and leaky Bosch fuel injection.

This 1979 Renault R17 Gordini is the product of a recent ground up restoration after being abandoned for 15 years. It has been completely stripped, and everything has been replaced or restored to original spec, making this the closest thing you will find to a brand new Renault in the US. Renault's 15 and (later) 17 were built for eight years between 1971 and 1979. They were a couple of versions of the Renault 12 below the skin but used the Renault 16 TS engine for the 17 Gordini editions. Vintage R&T Review: 1974 Renault 17 Gordini Coupe-Convertible. The R 17 was definitely one of the more exotic cars in the US at the time. And the coupe-convertible version, with its giant sunroof, only enhanced that. This is a rather interesting review, because R&T had tested an R17 two years earlier, and were none too fond of it.
